Stay Away From Diabetes

Diabetes sufferers are at a higher risk!

People with diabetes are at a higher risk for developing complications after surgery including infection and prolonged hospital stay, especially if blood sugars are high. The evidence that microvascular complications of diabetes are strongly associated with previous hyperglycemia raises interest in earlier diagnosis during the asymptomatic period. However, population-based screening for type 2 diabetes mellitus in high-risk children is not recommended, except as part of research efforts to advance knowledge about optimal prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

Adolescents with diabetes are neither more nor less likely to experiment with or use drugs. The most common drugs are tobacco and alcohol. What are sometimes referred to as macrovascular complications of diabetes are in fact related to cardiovascular disease due to accelerated atherosclerosis. These include ischaemic heart disease, stroke and peripheral vascular disease (leading to ulceration and lower limb amputation).

According to many renowned authors, people with type 2 diabetes are 83 percent more likely to be diagnosed with Parkinson's than people in the general population. The study found the association between the two diseases existed for both men and women, independently of other confounding factors. People with Diabetes are at greater risk of developing depression than those without Diabetes. Having both disorders impacts the individuals ability to self manage their illness and leads to a significantly greater risk of complications. As previously discussed, the risk factors for diabetes are also common to conditions such as cardiovascular disease and some cancers. As a consequence, prevention strategies that reduce levels of these risk factors are likely to have widespread health benefits across the broader spectrum of health categories
